From the Chronicles of Fulton County comes a tale of a Black teenager refusing to cooperate with the police (a white police officer), who then was forced to shoot him in an act of self-defense. This action took place in predominately Black South Fulton County (Union City, a town that is roughly 75 percent Black and home to the famously empty Union Station Mall -- a failed monument to consumerism when the immutable law of Visible Black Hand of Economics strikes).
The Black kid died. A Fulton County Grand Jury exonerated the white cop of any wrong-doing. The Black community was enraged. Justice, after all, must be served and Black people are - of course - entirely innocent of any crime in America (especially one they committed) and will be vigorously defended by the Black community. CBS Atlanta reports:
State Senator Vincent Fort, (D-Atlanta), will hand-deliver a letter to the U.S. Attorney's Office Wednesday requesting a federal investigation into the shooting death of Ariston Waiters, 19.Ask and you shall receive with Eric "My People" Holder's Department of Justice assigning an attorney to probe this obvious case of racial bigotry. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports:
Luther Lewis, a Union City police officer, killed Waiters in December while responding to a fight. A grand jury last week found Lewis did nothing wrong and did not indict him.
"We've got to send that message loud and clear, so it will reverberate from Union City to this place that it ain't over yet!" declared Fort shortly after the grand jury's decision.
Lewis and Waiters ended up in a scuffle, even though witnesses said Waiters had nothing to do with the fight Lewis was responding to. Waiters was shot twice in the back. Lewis said he had no choice because Waiters grabbed his weapon.
"I did not get out of bed that morning to find Ariston Waiters to shoot him. I did not come to work that day to change my life forever," Lewis told CBS Atlanta.
Waiters' supporters called Lewis a "murderer" and said he racially-profiled.
Federal investigators are taking on the case of the the Union City teen shot and killed by police last December.
"The U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI will look in to the shooting death of Ariston Waiters to determine whether any federal laws were violated," Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney Charysse Alexander told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.
The decision was made following an impromptu meeting between U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates and state Sen. Vincent D. Fort (D-Atlanta) late Wednesday morning.
Fort was accompanied by Waiters' mother, Freda Waiters, her attorney Mawuli Mel Davis, several family members and community activists as they gathered to deliver a letter to Yates requesting her aid in the case.
"It was an illegal arrest," Fort told the AJC following the meeting. "Even [Fulton County District Attorney] Paul Howard said Ariston never should've been arrested."It should be obvious to anyone reading this now what is happening in America. A Black kid in South Fulton is dead, shot by a white cop because he refused to cooperate with the police. An elected Black official dares to assert that race played a factor in the shooting, though Black people are probably responsible for 98 percent of the crime in Union City (after all, they are 75 percent of the city).
Will it be illegal to defend yourself from Black people in the near future? Just ask George Zimmerman, who sits in a jail cell in Stanford, Florida.
Just ask Officer Luther Lewis, whose life will now come under scrutiny for daring to defend himself while arresting a Black reprobate.
